This iai is the tradition of Ōmori Rokurōzaemon. Since its meaning did not differ substantially from Eishin-ryū, Morimasa incorporated it after discussion. Rokurōzaemon was Morimasa’s teacher of swordsmanship and belonged to Shinkage-ryū. It is said that there were five forms of the old tradition of Kamiizumi Ise-no-kami Nobutsuna. According to another account, Musashi-no-kami’s1 Manji, Sekkō, and an ultimate two-sword teaching2 were transmitted, but died out with Morimasa-sensei. This is truly regrettable.

Shohattō

Densho instruction

Step the right foot forwards and perform nukitsuke and uchikomi, then chiburi. When rising, bring the rear foot up to the forward right foot; draw the right foot back and sheathe the sword.

Explanation

Meaning: When seated facing one another about four shaku apart, suddenly cut horizontally near the enemy’s eyes. In the event of a simultaneous draw, cut into the hand with which the enemy performs nukitsuke. As the enemy falls, immediately cut from jōdan.

Action: Face the shōmen and sit in seiza. Let only the big toes lightly touch, and place both hands on the thighs without deliberately spreading the elbows; the same applies below.
Drawing method: Quietly rise onto the toes of both feet, break the koiguchi with the left thumb, incline the sword slightly outwards, and grasp the tsuka about five bu from the tsuba; except where otherwise stated, the same method applies below. Draw as the right heel is set down near the head of the left knee. At the completion of the draw, the sword is at right-shoulder height; the edge is horizontal and directed straight across, while the kissaki points slightly downwards. Drawing the left shoulder well to the rear gives the sword greater vitality. Except where otherwise stated, the same drawing method applies below. One should have the intent to cut the enemy clean through — expressed in the ancient name Futsu-no-mitama3. Bring the sword overhead from the direction of the left shoulder and grip the kashira with the left hand. During this movement, advance the left knee to the right heel; step the right foot forwards and cut down at the same time.
Release the left hand and place it at the left hip. At the same time, rotate and externally turn the right fist widely to the right, with the thumbnail facing upwards; open the right shoulder to the right side of the body, bend the elbow, and bring the right fist approximately beside the temple. As you rise, extend the right elbow forwards and to the right until the right arm forms an angle of approximately forty-five degrees with the body. This is called chiburi.
Next, draw the left foot to the right while drawing the right foot back to change the feet, and take the koiguchi with the left hand.
Sheathing method: Bend the right arm so that the back of the blade near the tsuba comes close to the left hand. Using the most prominent point between the left thumb and index finger as the guide for the mune, extend the right hand forwards until the kissaki reaches the koiguchi, while also twisting the hips to the left to facilitate the action. Slowly sheathe the sword. The left knee reaches the ground as sheathing is completed.

Action: Sit in seiza with your back to the shōmen. Pivot on the right knee and turn 180 degrees to the left. Take particular care that the right foot turns sufficiently, opening it slightly outside the right knee. At the end of the rotation, step the left foot approximately one pace forwards and act as in Shohattō. Thereafter, proceed as in Shohattō.

Densho instruction

First step the right foot forwards and perform nukitsuke. Step in with the left foot and perform uchikomi, then hiraki. Draw the left foot back and perform another nukitsuke. Thereafter, proceed as at the beginning.

Explanation

Meaning: When seated facing one another, suddenly cut as in Shohattō. When the enemy evades the cut, immediately pursue and cut him down. As you are about to sheathe, another enemy attacks; respond at once and cut the enemy’s waist.

Action: Sit in seiza facing the shōmen. Draw as in Shohattō. While raising the sword overhead, pull the left foot up to the right foot, then step it one pace forwards and cut down to the front.
Place the left hand at the waist and move the right fist out to the right so that the edge faces diagonally downwards to the right; during this movement, lower the right knee to the ground. While sheathing in this posture, keep the left knee bent and slowly draw it back. When the left heel nears the buttock, withdraw it suddenly approximately one pace and, remaining half-raised, draw again and cut the enemy’s waist (with the same swordwork as in Shohattō). As the sword is raised overhead, sink the left hip, advance slightly, and place the knee on the ground; put the right foot forwards and cut straight down. Thereafter, proceed as in Shohattō.

Ryūtō

Densho instruction

As the enemy cuts from the direction of the left shoulder, step out and begin the draw. Step in with the left foot, receive the cut with the drawing sword, and let it flow past. Step the right foot towards the left and perform uchikomi. Then bring the sword to the knee, change to a reverse grip, and sheathe while placing the knee on the ground.

Explanation

Meaning: When the enemy unexpectedly cuts from the left side, draw at once with the attack, receive and flow it past, and take advantage as the enemy pitches forwards to cut the waist.

Action: Sit in seiza facing right relative to the shōmen. Turn the head to the left and, while stepping the left foot approximately one pace forwards, grasp the tsuka from above with the right hand and draw. Act with the feeling of directing the enemy’s sword, which is cutting towards the head, past and behind the left shoulder.
Unlike the preceding cases, there is no time to rotate the sword outwards to facilitate the draw. Because the sword must be drawn suddenly, grasp the tsuka from above; consequently, when the sword has been drawn into the receiving action, the edge faces slightly to the right.
The right fist is above and to the right front of the forehead, with the right elbow slightly bent. While rising, open the right foot approximately one and a half paces behind and to the right of the left foot, bending the right elbow so that the sword is carried as though upon the shoulder.
Pivoting on the ball of the left foot, turn approximately ninety degrees to the left while drawing the right foot towards the left until the feet are almost together. Bend both knees lightly outwards and settle the upper body squarely over the hips.
As the feet are about to come together, add the left hand and cut down towards the left front. The kissaki is slightly lowered and the edge faces diagonally down to the left, cutting the enemy’s waist/rib region as he pitches forwards.
Draw the left foot approximately one pace back, raise the upper body, and move both hands slightly to the left so that the portion near the kissaki appears to rest above the right knee; take particular care, as the right knee tends to straighten. The left elbow is generally extended.
Sheathing: Release the right hand and regrasp the tsuka from above, as though covering the tsuba with half the palm. Release the left hand and take the koiguchi. With the right hand, reverse the sword so that the kissaki is directed towards the left shoulder, and sheathe it while placing the left knee on the ground.

Meaning: Sit on the left side of the person committing seppuku, facing him, and perform kaishaku. Its distinguishing feature is that it is carried out with the utmost quietness and solemnity.

Keeping the head directed forwards, pivot ninety degrees to the right on the left knee and put the right foot slightly forwards while drawing the sword halfway. Rise while completing the draw; turn the left foot towards the front, draw the right foot to the left, and stand upright.
Position the right fist below and in front of the right shoulder, roughly at breast height, with the back of the blade near the middle of the right upper arm.
Judge the appropriate moment, step the right foot forwards while raising the sword overhead, and cut diagonally down towards the left front as the foot reaches the ground. Raise the upper body slightly, then sheathe in the same manner as in Ryūtō.

Meaning: Evade the sword of an enemy cutting from the front while cutting down from jōdan to the chest. As the enemy retreats, pursue and cut again. After the enemy has fallen, continue to show zanshin and finally deliver a finishing thrust.

Action: Sit in seiza facing the shōmen. Step the right foot approximately one full pace forwards while drawing the sword halfway. Rise while drawing the left foot slightly back; at the same time, draw the right foot to the left and bring the sword overhead.
Step the right foot one pace forwards and cut down until the kissaki is approximately at chest height. Advance two steps beginning with the left foot, raise the sword overhead again, and cut down as the right foot reaches the ground.
Direct the eyes towards the ground approximately one ken ahead. Cut until the kissaki reaches around waist height, draw the left foot to the right, and immediately draw the right foot approximately one pace back while raising the sword overhead to show zanshin.
Slowly place the right knee on the ground while lowering the sword. Regrasp with the right hand in a reverse grip, release the left hand, hold the sword reversed, and place the left hand on the back of the blade near the kissaki. With the feeling of delivering the finishing thrust, draw the sword slightly upwards. Thereafter, sheathe according to the method used in Ryūtō.

As the enemy cuts from the left, step out, rise, perform nukitsuke and uchikomi, then chiburi and sheathe the sword. Do not place the knee on the ground. There is also a method in which one sweeps aside with nukitsuke before performing uchikomi.

Explanation

Meaning: Cut the forearm of an enemy attacking from the right side and then pursue with a further attack.

This is a standing form. Run forwards for several paces and perform nukitsuke and uchikomi as the right foot advances. Perform chiburi and sheathe the sword without placing the knee on the ground.

Explanation

Meaning: Pursue and cut an enemy attempting to escape. The form is performed standing throughout and is therefore tachi-iai.

In’yō-shintai kaewaza (Sakate In’yō-shintai)

Explanation

Alternative: From sitting in seiza facing the shōmen through chiburi and sheathing, the action is identical. Then, retaining the grip upon the tsuka from above, draw the left foot approximately one pace to the rear while drawing the sword as low as possible. Bring the sword to the side of the right leg with the edge upwards and lower it so that the kissaki projects slightly outwards. Thereafter, proceed exactly as in In’yō-shintai.

Battō (Nukiuchi)

(The original name given in the densho is Nukiuchi)

Densho instruction

While seated, as the enemy cuts from the front, extend or drive yourself up as you are, receive and let the cut flow past, perform uchikomi and hiraki, then sheathe the sword. Yet this is not properly ukenagashi; this point cannot be expressed in writing.

Explanation

Meaning: When both parties are seated very close together, suddenly cut towards the enemy directly in front.

Action: Sit in seiza facing the shōmen. Because the form assumes that the two parties are extremely close, move the right fist forwards and upwards as much as possible during the draw, bringing it approximately in front of the forehead. At the same time, move the kissaki close to the outside of the left upper arm and bring the sword overhead. During this action, bring the knees close together. Immediately open both knees and cut down until the kissaki reaches approximately two hand-widths above the ground.
Release the left hand and move the right fist out to the right, performing chiburi in the same manner as the first chiburi of In’yō-shintai. Then sheathe the sword.

  1. This most likely refers to Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (the founder of Shinkage-ryū), who was also known as Kamiizumi Musashi-no-kami Hidetsuna (上泉武蔵守秀綱); see the preface to the Shinkage-ryū hyōhō list of transmissions, which names him as such.

  2. A modern-Japanese rendering of a parallel densho conjectures that Sekkō denotes a kind of tai-atari in Shinkage-ryū, and that Manji refers to being able to draw and cut freely in any direction. Accordingly, 二刀至極 is taken separately as “ultimate two-sword teaching”; the precise content of all three teachings remains uncertain.

  3. ふつのみたま refers to Futsu-no-mitama (布都御魂), an ancient sword-divinity name closely associated with Futsunushi (経津主神), the deity of Katori Jingū, and also with Takemikazuchi in the Kojiki tradition. Futsu is believed to be onomatopoeia for a sword cutting through something in one swing, and here the name is explicitly linked with フッツリ切る, cutting clean through.

  4. In this older usage, すね refers to the knee rather than the shin; the action continues with 膝を突, placing the knee on the ground.

  5. The repeated appears to be a dittography; Soda’s witness has a single 引く

  6. Hosokawa’s densho as transcribed by Kimura has “left”; Mitsuhira quotes Soda’s copy as having “right”. The latter would appear to be correct.

  7. ふんぬんて represents 踏ん伸んで, read funnunde (ふんぬんで), and is given as such in the Soda witness. The repeated in 請請流し appears to be a dittography, and does not appear in Soda’s copy.
